I have a National Higher Diploma in Mechanical Engineering having completed both the national and the higher national diplomas in 1991 and 1993 respectively. The following courses were included in my field of study: strength of materials, fluid mechanics, mechanics of machines, applied thermodynamics, mathematics, electrotechnology, machine design, engineering materials.
In 1999 I completed the certificated engineer’s examinations and have achieved a Government Certificate of Competency (GCC) which recognises me as a certified engineer. Every factory in South Africa must have a certified engineer as the responsible engineer. The certified engineer is accountable and responsible for the supervision of machinery under his control in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 (RSA), General Machinery Regulations (GMR 2.1). By studying the abovementioned courses my understanding and knowledge of science and engineering fundamentals has been extremely enhanced.
I have a very good understanding and knowledge of engineering and technology and use best practice engineering techniques and also consult with other engineers when carrying out a task.
I regularly use the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII Division 1 for the construction and design of pressure vessels. I also use the German Standard and Code (Din), British Standards (BS) and the South African National Standards (previously known as SABS) when selecting material and codes for manufacturing and designing equipment.
In my current job, I regularly compile specifications and standards for suppliers to install new systems on existing or modified plant. Design procedures are done in accordance with the specific standards as set out by the specific industry. In the power generation industry for the design, manufacture and repair of boilers and pressure vessels, I use the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII Division 1. In the petro-chemical industry (hydro carbon) I use the American Petroleum Industry (API) standards and codes when designing systems.
All aspects and comparisons between various equipment is analysed by me to ensure that the most technically acceptable equipment is used for the intended purpose. I compare the design specifications to the system operating conditions.
Various methods of observing, analysing and testing of equipment and processes have been conducted by me. For example, the differential expansion on a turbine is monitored and if found to be outside of the acceptable limits, necessary steps are taken to prevent the turbine running in these conditions to prevent damage to the machine.
I have excellent knowledge of operations and maintenance of boilers and turbines, especially large 600 MW machines and have received specific training in the operation and maintenance of boilers and turbines at Eskom Power Stations. I have been trained in safety and have been authorised as a responsible person to accept safe working permits for major plant overhauls on a complete boiler turbine unit during shutdowns.
I am currently the Chief turbine engineer of a consulting company which is contracted to Eskom to return to service six 200MW mothballed units at Grootvlei Power Station.
I have sound knowledge of the business environment and have a certificate in management from the University of South Africa and currently completing my final year of an MBA.

My verbal and written communication skills are very good with English being my first language. I have excellent document management skills and skilled in the use of computers and computer software.
